A Structured Literacy Approach to Writing and Comprehension (Grades 2nd and Up) Strong writing begins with strong sentences. In this hands-on professional learning experience, teachers will learn how to help students turn knowledge into clear, organized writing by strengthening the language skills that support both reading comprehension and written expression. Grounded in the principles of structured literacy, this training shows teachers how to guide students through a powerful progression: learn → discuss → generate sentences → expand ideas → organize thinking → write paragraphs Participants will experience modeled lessons, collaborative practice, and practical strategies that can be used immediately in the classroom. Drawing on research from The Writing Rope and The Writing Revolution, teachers will learn how to build sentence-level writing, strengthen syntax and vocabulary, and help students move from simple sentences to well-developed paragraphs. Teachers will leave with clear routines and tools to connect reading comprehension directly to student writing across content areas.
