About this event
NOTE: Date and time have yet to be determined. John Singer Sargent's charcoal portraits are celebrated for their remarkable economy of line and expressive mark-making, capturing the personality and presence of his subjects with an improvisational confidence. Drawing Portraits Like Sargent is a hands on workshop that introduces participants to the core techniques of portrait drawing through the work of John Singer Sargent. The program combines a short introduction to Sargent’s approach with guided studio practice, allowing participants to explore how he used line, value, and confident mark making to construct expressive portraits. Participants learn the foundational principles of observational portrait drawing, then put them into practice through a focused study inspired by the work of John Singer Sargent. Using a curated selection of his drawings as reference, participants will develop their eye and bring his techniques to life on the page. The workshop is designed for a general audience and emphasizes clear instruction, accessible techniques, and a direct connection between museum collections and art making. WORKSHOP CONTENT The session focuses on key elements of Sargent’s approach to portrait drawing: • Materials, including charcoal pencils, sticks and eraser • Measuring and placing features through observation • Building form through value rather than outline • Expressive line and economical mark making • Indicating light, shadow, and structure in the head Participants complete a portrait study using these techniques.
