INTRODUCTION TO PORTRAIT SCULPTURE /Joyce Ryan
Thursdays from 1:30 - 4:30 PM

April 2nd - May 28th9 Weeks
Class Fee: $325

This course introduces portrait sculpture through structure and observation, rather than copying surface features or chasing likeness. Working with clay on a shared 3D-printed head armature, students learn how the human head is constructed—starting with proportion and gradually building toward anatomy and a neutral portrait. The class emphasizes clarity, process, and understanding over speed or polish. Students are guided step by step through head proportions, basic skull landmarks, major muscle groups, and how anatomy softens into a believable human face. The approach is supportive and methodical, making portrait sculpture accessible even for those who have felt intimidated by faces in the past. No prior anatomy experience is required. This course is ideal for adult learners who enjoy working thoughtfully and want a solid foundation they can apply to future sculptural, craft, or digital work. This class is appropriate for: Adult beginners, Artists returning to sculpture, Figurative sculptors, seeking stronger fundamentals, anyone interested in understanding how faces are built. Students will gain: Confidence working with portrait proportions, a clear, repeatable sculpting process, a foundational understanding of facial structure Skills transferable to clay, wax, and digital sculpting

*EM217 WED clay will be provided for this class, this is not a kiln fired clay.
