During this two-day workshop, Krista will share her favorite hand-building techniques for hollow construction, creating volume and gesture, refining facial features, and developing fur and a variety of other surface textures. Students will put these approaches into practice as they create a 9”–11” tall animal bust (head, neck, and shoulders) filled with life and personality. Whether your inspiration leans toward the magical and mysterious or the cute and cuddly, this workshop invites you to explore the narrative and symbolic possibilities of animal-themed sculpture. Participants are encouraged to bring printed or digital images with multiple reference views of their chosen animal. Some prior hand-building experience is required. Class 1 - We will take a methodical approach to construction, beginning with the neck and shoulders and gradually building upward toward the nose. Emphasis will be placed on establishing strong structure, proportion, and overall form. Class 2 - We will refine the mouth, eyes, and ears while developing surface detail and texture. Attention will shift to the top half of the bust as we explore fur and other defining features, bringing expression and personality into focus. *Color and glaze treatments for finishing your sculpture will be discussed, with students completing glazing independently after the Workshop. *1-2 weeks of drying/storage is included and 1 bisque firing. Glaze firing is not included with tuition.
