Grades: K-5th. If you’re interested in learning chess — or strengthening your current skills — this class gives you a clear, structured way to improve in a supportive, encouraging environment. Build on a strong foundation through focused instruction, guided practice, puzzle-solving, and plenty of real games. Each week will introduce new ideas to put into action and interactive lessons where beginners can learn the basics with confidence and more experienced players can continue to grow. The ultimate goal is for you to have a deeper understanding of chess and the opportunity to apply what you’ve learned in a friendly tournament setting. Instructor: Taylor Thuernagle. 6 classes. No class 5/14.
Weekly Instruction Layout:
Week 1: Introduction and Openings - rules, setup, and general opening principles
Week 2: Check, Checkmate, and Stalemate - how games end
Week 3: Tactics I - pins, forks, and skewers
Week 4: Endgame Basics - key checkmates and pawn promotion
Week 5: Strategy & Game Play - planning, trading, and time management
Week 6: Tournament Week - Swiss-style mini tournament and review
