Prospective and incoming students are invited to join Alma College in the opportunity to not only serve but to utilize their own unique skill sets and bring leadership to identify and meet the needs of their community through a service-based camp experience. This 5-day service and leadership experience provides students the opportunity to serve within the Mid-Michigan community through various community based projects. Students will learn the importance of community organizing and how to use their talents and inclinations to meet the needs of the world around them. This camp is specifically designed to promote entrepreneurial thinking in order to encourage students to become leaders as they learn about the root causes of social questions, learn how to sustain solutions, and create a lasting impact locally, nationally and abroad. Students who serve as high school leaders are considering a profession in the nonprofit sector, aim to serve the community through health professions, or are interested in international studies are strongly encouraged to apply for this opportunity. At this camp, students will: • Earn at least 20 community service hours; • Work hands on with other students and community members through local and national service organizations; • Learn about resource development and stewardship of gifts and assets to maximize service efforts; • Create contextually based service proposals to lead other students and adults in participants’ hometowns; • Explore and analyze the benefits of mission-tourism, short and long term service efforts, and the advantages of partner across faith and cultural distinctions; • Use an interfaith approach to work with people of differing backgrounds with a common goal of compassionate service to one’s shared community.
