This course will discuss how the war destroyed four great empires (Russian, German, Austrian and Turkish) and left three more (British, French and Italian) on the brink of collapse. The armistice that went into effect on November 11, 1918, stopped the fighting for then. However, subsequent treaties aimed at establishing lasting peace remade the map of both Europe and the Near East, set the stage for World War II, and led to chaos and conflict that continues to this day.
