Instructor: Dr. Mike Zang has worked in land management, conservation, environmental education, and various forms of community development. He recently graduated with a PhD in urban and regional planning from Florida State University, where he studied the impacts of grassroot, community-based organizations on local environmental planning efforts in Milwaukee, WI. Description: Making cities more sustainable in the 21st century will require much more than renewable energy, autonomous and electric vehicles, and buying organic produce at Whole Foods with reusable bags. This 2-part course focuses on smart growth and land conservation as complementary actions for regional growth management. We will cover various smart growth and conservation tactics at the level of the block, neighborhood, and district - such as mixed-use zoning, transit-oriented development, and transfer of development rights programs. We will also discuss how sustainable urbanism is critical not only for landscape-scale ecosystem health but also for human health and psychosocial well-being.
