Instructor: Dr. Zara Browne is an anthropologist who dedicated her doctoral research to the Irish Traveller community of Murphy Village in North Augusta, SC. She specializes in nomadic and separatist communities. Zara's work in Murphy Village has been featured in multiple news outlets, including The Post and Courier and Augusta Today. Description: Did you know that the Irish Travellers speak their own historical language that is unique to them? Common misrepresentations of the Irish Travellers call their language an “argot” or a “dialect.” In this two-session course, we will address the history of the language, called Cant or Gammon, and debates in the literature and among Irish Travellers about when and where the language first appeared, and why. This course will not teach the language out of respect to the Irish Traveller community’s wish for linguistic privatism, but we will touch upon some Irish Traveller words, which Irish Travellers have made public, and the status of the Irish Traveller language today.
