Arden, the Modjeska House and Gardens, was the home of world renowned Shakespearian actress, Helena Modjeska. She came to America from Poland in 1876 and purchased this land to create an idyllic retreat surrounded by a beautiful forest within an isolated canyon. The name "Arden" was chosen by Madame Modjeska and her husband because the house resembled the forest "Arden" in the play "As You Like It." The lovely house has several porch areas, Palladian windows, and picturesque gables. Designed by famous New York architect, Stanford White. After our tour we will be going to Polly's Pies for lunch.
