Snazzy Surfaces (ceramics/pottery) Ages 18 & Up
Pre-Requisite: Prior Clay Experience
Instructor: Rebecca Pincus
Ever wonder how you can make your clay projects more interesting? The answer is Surface Treatments! Learn how to transfer a pattern onto your clay, use various tools to carve, add sprigging to your work and do additions to build up your work sculpturally. You will also learn how to apply decals, a simple and quick method of designing on your surface. In addition, you will earn how to use slips. We will explore slip trailing which uses bottles of thickened slip to create three dimensional designs. And finally, you will learn the very satisfying technique of sgrafitto (meaning "to scratch" in Italian). This technique involves applying a contrasting colored slip to your clay and then carving a design into it to reveal the clay beneath. All of these techniques are done during the leather hard stage of clay, before it has been fired. You will create your work, and then we will play with these various approaches to altering the surface. The technique can be applied to flat tiles, plates, trays and bowls, cups, vases, boxes or any other shape. Payable to the instructor on the first day of class: Clay $25, materials fee $10.
