June 3-7: Tiny House Dry-In (sheathing and windows)

Hammerstone • 3285 Jacksonville Rd. TrumansburgNY  14886 Organized by Hammerstone: Carpentry for Women, LLC

About this event

Prerequisite: Our 2-day basic skills course or an exception from Hammerstone is required to take this course. Overview: Dry-in is exactly what it sounds like - it is when the initial protective layers have been applied to the shell of the house so that the interior is protected from precipitation.  It typically involves sheathing, weather resistive barrier (the layer that sheds water - sometimes a wrap like Tyvek, sometimes a coating on sheathing), roof underlayment, and window and door installation.  Drying in a house takes place immediately after framing.  In fact, some steps of dry in happen in conjunction with framing in larger houses. Dry in is also an important step for the thermal performance of your house.  A well enclosed house keeps air from blowing through the walls.  This is often accomplished by carefully taping all the seams in the sheathing.  The importance of air sealing will be discussed in this class. After dry in, subcontractors can continue to work inside the house installing electric, plumbing, insulation and even drywall, even before the exterior finishes (roofing, siding, etc.) have been installed. Project Description: This class will work as a team to dry in the tiny house started in the Tiny House Framing course.  Students will install wall and roof sheathing with an integral WRB, tape sheathing seams, and install windows and doors.  This class is ideal for tiny house enthusiasts, those interested in new construction of any kind, or those folks tackling renovations that include window or door replacement.  We will discuss the importance of and methods for proper air and water management around openings.  This class is part of our Tiny House series Students under 18 may attend with parental permission
