Forest Service Office • 925 Weiss Dr. Steamboat SpringsCO  80487 Organized by Yampatika

About this event

About the Naturalists: Mary O'Brien has been studying and practicing herbal medicine since 1987. A Colorado native, she has lived in the Yampa Valley for over 30 years, where she teaches herbal medicine, makes herbal products, and maintains a medicinal garden for the Yampa River Botanic Park. Karen Vail received her B.S. in Horticulture, with a concentration in Botany from Colorado State University, and earned her Master's Degree in Gardening from the Royal Horticultural Society in England. Karen and Mary are co-authors of "Edible and Medicinal Plants of the Southern Rockies. Date and Time: May 20th. We will meet at 11:40am, and should be wrapped up by 3:20pm. The event will take place from 12pm - 3pm. Location: We will meet at the USFS Office at 925 Weiss Drive to carpool/caravan to the trailhead. You will be left behind if you are late. Ages: 18+ What to expect: This foraging tour will take us along a private trail that is about 2.5 miles in total length. The trail is mostly flat, with ~150 feet of elevation gain towards the middle of the loop. Along the way, Karen and Mary will point out and collect forgeable items. After the foraging hike, we will gather in a nearby barn area for snacks, refreshments, and a Q&A with Karen and Mary about local medicinal and edible plants. What to wear: Dress for the weather (current and future) and dress in layers! Many people like to wear long pants/sleeves to protect themselves from the sun, dirt, and things that might make them itchy (mosquitos, etc.). Avoid cotton when you’re able and go with a synthetic material or wool. Also remember to wear sturdy hiking shoes, good socks, a cool sun hat, and sunscreen! What to bring in your day pack: Water bottles, snacks, sunscreen, extra layers, and your waterproof jacket- weather changes quickly, so make sure to prepare for cooler/wet weather. Please bring along any medications you may need, including epi-pens. We recommend bringing along gardening gloves.
