About this event
(Debate encompasses reading, writing, speaking, research skills, critical thinking, listening skills, and team work.) Have you ever found yourself in an argument with another person and wished you could express your ideas in a more persuasive way? Do you wish you were better at organizing your thoughts and communicating them to others? Exploring the world of formal debate is a great way to address a variety of social interactions. Join us in this crash course on formal debate. Students will learn commonly used formats, terminology, and procedures used in formal debate, as well as various techniques to improve their debating skills. Class time will be spent researching and preparing for in-class debates, which will culminate in a friendly competition to see which two teams will perform in a live debate at Recognition Night. Bringing a phone or laptop with internet access is encouraged as class time will be spent researching debate topics and preparing for arguments and rebuttals. Students may need to spend time researching topics outside of co-op hours, however most work will be done during class time. PARENT NOTES: Students are encouraged to bring a phone or laptop with them to class so they can conduct research for their debate topic and prepare their arguments and rebuttals.
