Welcome to Chess Club! We intend to have fun learning the game of chess and welcome players of all abilities. Beginners will learn the board, the pieces, and tactics while more experienced players will enjoy learning advanced tactics, attempting chess puzzles, playing against their schoolmates and may help teach the beginners. This session will be led by one of our Peninsula High School chess club members. Students will learn how to play chess over the board, will have access to chess strategy books in the reading nook, and will be offered optional "homework" with ChessKid.com. Students will become familiar with over-the-board tournament rules, learn chess notation, and will use chess clocks. Chess Club is a great way to develop social and emotional skills, develop as a leader (mentoring less experienced players), and build a community across grade levels. The Chess Club intends to participate in local tournaments if possible, which offers another opportunity to meet fellow chess players from around the community. NOTE: this club cannot function without parent volunteers to assist with every meeting. Please do not sign up your student unless you are willing to volunteer at least once during the session. No class on Friday, February 16, 2024
