GFS’s Intermediate Chess Club (which will take place during lunch and recess on Wednesdays) is geared toward students who have had at least a full year of chess, typically 3rd and 4th graders. We will learn to use the correct terminology in chess including: "rank," "file," "center," and "diagonal." Students will learn about forks, pins, skewers, discovered attacks, and removing the defender. We will speak about squares using the rank and file coordinate system. Students also will learn how to record their moves but will not be required to do so. Coach Ross Colby, is a nationally rated expert chess player, who has been coaching scholastic chess clubs for over twenty years. He recently has coached scholastic teams from Philadelphia that have won two national titles!
