Students will learn the basics of theatrical costume design through interpretation of an age-appropriate short play and characters, researching what people wore in different historic eras, communicating ideas through sketching and idea boards and finally creating theatrical costumes and props. Included will be: • The design process and collaborative process in the theater • Reading a script for practical costume considerations and inspiration • Analyzing characters particular personalities, realities and relationships in the play • An overview of costume history • Where and how to research • Creative exploration and collaboration • Going from an idea to rough sketches to renderings for your costumes • Going from page to stage with your costumes This class will include costume & prop making and costume crafts like hats, masks and/or jewelry making.
