About this event

Description

Do you worry about falling? We have a solution for you - A Matter of Balance. This award-winning program is specifically designed to help older adults who are concerned about falls to reduce their fear of falling and increase their activity levels. The course is eight weeks long and conducted in-person, with two trainers available each week.
During the classes, participants will learn how to control their fears of falling, set realistic goals for increasing activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors, and promote exercise to increase strength and balance. The program is designed to benefit adults who have sustained a fall in the past, restrict activities because of concerns about falling, and are interested in improving their flexibility, balance, and strength. Participants should also be ambulatory and able to problem-solve.
A Matter of Balance provides eight two-hour in-person sessions for older adults. The classes use role-playing, videos, discussions, problem-solving, and group activities to review the fear of falling. Participants will learn how to make good decisions with the use of "assertiveness training" and "cognitive restructuring". There is also 30 minutes of evidence-based exercises, which begins in session three and continues each week.
The workshops are led by trained hospital professionals with experience working with adults, and/or by a trained peer with a strong interest in fall prevention.
