Mechanics of Magic (7th - 10th) (Week 8: July 21st-25th) PM

Georgetown BCTC • 200 Technology Ct. GeorgetownKY  40324 Organized by Newton's Attic

About this event

Magic has had a renaissance in recent years, with many performers showcasing their work in TV shows, movies, and live theater. If you’ve ever seen a trick performed in a movie like “Now You See Me” or on a show like “America’s Got Talent” or “Penn and Teller: Fool Us”, and wondered “How did that happen?” this class may be for you. A successful magic effect has more work going on behind and before the performance than occurs in front of the audience. Magicians and their support staff use physics, chemistry, math, engineering, and psychology to deliver a brief interlude of altered reality. Participants in this class will construct and learn to use items needed to perform a variety of magic effects. Depending on the particular class session and the interests of the participants, this will include the expected range of cards, coins, ropes, and boxes that you’ve all seen. Students will use a variety of hand and power tools to make items that magicians use every day but you DON’T see. And unless you’re in the class and learn the magician’s code, we can’t tell you what they are! The class is taught by Ben Sego, an engineering, math, and computer science professional, professional pyrotechnician, game and puzzle designer, magic prop builder, and magic consultant, He is also a member of the Louisville Magic Club and meets regularly with other magicians to trade stories, ideas, and techniques, and then works to put those ideas into practice. Ben has been a special guest instructor with Newton’s Attic for many years, lending his expertise to such specialty classes as VR Development, Retro Arcade Raspberry Pi, and Camp Kaboom. We are thrilled to have Ben back, bringing yet another new class to the growing library of Newton’s Attic’s unusual and engaging STEM day camps.
