About this event

Human-robot embodiment: myths, principles, techniques, quantification, benefits, and more Summary: When we design human-robot systems such as prostheses or exoskeletons, we aim for the device to be naturally accepted by the user as a tool. But for many, an even larger aspiration is for the device to be naturally accepted by the user as an integral part of themselves as they interact with the external world. This concept is termed embodiment, and it is currently a word commonly heard in the biorobotics community to justify the utility of new devices or as an outcome worth measuring. However, several communities define embodiment differently. Various groups measure aspects of embodiment using different outcome measures, with varying degrees of objectivity and quantification. There is also a debate on why embodiment might be a good thing in the first place (e.g., has our field turned to it as a silver-medal alternative to demonstrating that sensory feedback directly enhances performance, or does embodiment enable users to truly integrate devices into their bodies’ sensorimotor control loops to the effect of tolerance and acceptance even in the presence of substandard performance?). In this workshop, we have gathered several experts who come from diverse fields including neuroscience, haptics, human-robot interfaces, and prosthetics to discuss what embodiment is and whether or not it is a meaningful pursuit for our community. We will discuss terminology and concepts. We will review biorobotic attempts to achieve embodiment and assess the outcome measures groups have used to quantify it. We will also discuss the broader topic of how embodiment may fit into a psychosocial model of health and wellness.
