June 27: Aida (pronounced "Eye-eeda"): Another very popular opera, Aida was composed by Giuseppe Verdi in honor of the opening of a new opera house in Egypt. Appropriately, this opera takes place in Ancient Egypt. In about 2.5 hours it follows it follows the love triangle two women (Queen Amneris and Aida, her slave) have for the dashing leader of the Egyptian army, Radames. The triumphant military leader loves Aida which infuriates Amneris. She demands that he love only her or there will be 'consequences' . He refuses to love the Queen and so there is indeed a tragic outcome, but the glorious music throughout this opera makes it very worthwhile to enjoy.
