Fishbowl- for Grades 6-8: Session A - 10.30am - 12pm

Fallon Middle School • 3601 Kohnen Way DublinCA  94568 Organized by Dublin Partners in Education

About this event

Fishbowl for Grades 6-8 is a strategy for organizing group discussions where students are separated into an inner and outer circle. In the inner circle or Fishbowl, students have a discussion, students in the outer circle listen to the discussion and take notes. This is a great exercise to broaden thinking skills. In Fishbowl, the inner circle is the few students who are brave enough to share their thinking first. The outer circle gives students who might be more leery, a little bit of time to think and process what is being said in the inner circle. The inside circle reads a question which is facilitated by the instructor, while those in the outside circle listen but do not speak. Each question is discussed in this way, making sure everyone in the inner circle has a chance to speak. The circles are then reversed. Fishbowl activities allow students to practice skills under peer review and audience in a public speaking format. This builds critical thinking skills and broadens new perspectives on topics. Fishbowl discussions are similar to Socratic seminars, but here we increase the chances for participation to ensure everyone has an opportunity to speak and listen, fostering a dynamic and secure environment for exploring ideas and topics.
