About this event

Description

NO CLASS JUNE 19THCourse DescriptionPainting/Beginners (Introduction to Painting – Part Three) is a continuation of and final course of a three-part traditional course designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of traditional painting. Students will develop a fundamental understanding of the complex medium of oil and acrylic paint. Students will learn how to handle paint, mix colors, organize picture plane, and develop observational skills. Students will work primarily from still life set-ups and/or photographs. We will also discuss master paintings (copying the works of great artists from the past) and working from photographs.Note: While not required, it is highly recommended that you take a basic drawing class prior to taking this class. The focus of this course is on Representational Painting which assumes you have a basic understanding of foundational drawing skills.
Note: If you have basic painting skills but desire instructions to further your skills you do not need to have taken the previous two courses.
Course Objectives (General Description)
This is an 8 week course students will continue to…
Develop their observational and drawing skills translating three-dimensional information onto a two-dimensional plane (the canvas).• Develop a strong sense of shadow and light by observing and developing proper color and value structure of the subject matter.• Create accurate and dynamic color through proper color mixing.• Develop knowledge and understanding of the material (oil paint, brushes, medium, solvents, etc) required to make a proper oil painting.
How Course Objectives are Address
Students will produce one or more paintings during this course. The goal for all paintings will be to produce paintings that are realistic in form and proportion; that uses color and value to give the illusion of shadow and light, as well as the illusion of form and depth; that displays a strong composition; and skillful use of the paint medium. In addition to developing their skill through practical assignments, the instructor will show students historical and contemporary painting examples appropriate for the skill of painting being taught in this course; give demonstrations; and will give individual and group critiques.
