June 24th-27th, 20249am-4pmFree parking included dailyFirst payment $200 (Second payment $175 due by June 1st) Call the desk 614-645-7047 Instructor: Hiroshi Hayakawa For people interested in exploring the potentials of graphite and charcoal drawing taking a mixed media approach using the figure as a subject. Some basic level of figure drawing experience is preferred but not an absolute prerequisite.Basic under-drawing procedure will be discussed including anatomy, proportions, and measuring methods. Students will learn how to expand the detail and tonal range of graphite and how to use their tools in a more expressive way. Day 2, you will learn how to add an expressive quality to the graphite drawing from the first day using the wash technique. Day 3, students use charcoal tools on hand-colored paper and how to push the expressive gestural quality of the medium. On the fourth day, they will explore a mixed media technique by introducing other mediums such as pastel, calk, colored pencil to the drawing from the third day.At the end of this four-day session, students will have two completed drawings.Materials Visiting Artist provides: Practice paper for students, Ink for hand coloring paper, odorless mineral spirit, charcoal and graphite powder, and a few other sharable itemsMaterials list for students: (be specific and include where specialty items can be found online etc.)• Quality graphite pencils any brand (at least range from 4H to 6B) (#) Choices: Staedtler, Mitsubishi Hi-Uni, Faber-Castell Pitt Graphite Matte• Whatever pencil sharpener you normally use• Inexpensive synthetic brushes you wouldn’t miss if ruined (medium and wide)? (#)“Hake” brushes work well.• Soft vine charcoal (medium thickness 79mm diameter) any brand (#)• Charcoal stick Nitram 807171 (soft) (#)• Faber-castell Pitt charcoal pencil (hard) (#)• Strathmore Bristol board 300 or 400 velum surface (22”x30” or close to that size) or Arches watercolor paper heavy weight hot press (22”x30” or close to that size). You will need at least one sheet for this 4-day session (You will use a 1/2 sheet for each session). Heavy weight paper is strongly recommended. (#)• Other mediums for mixed media drawing: watercolor, pastels, colored pencils, conte, etc.? you’d need to bring your brushes and palette for watercolor. (#)• A few Cotton balls from a drug store• Soft sponge make-up pads/triangles• Blending stumps (medium and small) one set for charcoal, the other for graphite. (#)• Kneaded eraser (x 2) (#)• Quality vinyl eraser (#)• Mechanical eraser (fine point) (#)• Drawing board (18”x24”) with protective white surface You can buy a piece of masonite board with white coating on it from a home improvement center and have it cut down to the size.• Masking tape (#)• Craft knife• Disposable gloves (if you are sensitive to mineral spirit)
