No Class July 1Stories for Change
We all witness moments and movements in life that show evidence that positive change is possible. What if we harness those stories to bring about more positive change?
This 8 week course will guide participants in:
Pre-production
- analyzing criteria of effective stories of change in various formats (podcast, video, article)
- engaging in narrative exercises to develop confidence and skill in storytelling
- using “change frames” to select a story of change to tell
- choosing the most powerful format for telling that story to make change
- writing a logline and outlining/storyboarding the story
- learning the “art of the interview” & interviewing subjects
- learning to use the technology required to capture your story
- capturing and/or collecting documentary and/or archival media
- determining the story arc and what to emphasize
- editing the story
- engaging in peer critique
- adding audiovisual elements to enhance story
- publishing the story on platforms that will reach the priority audience
- creating a distribution plan that will help the story make change
- class exhibition with family and friends
- Personal stories of growth (self, family, community)
- Social/political stories (movements, campaigns, issues)
- Stories of a shift in mindset, approach, or practice (work, school, institution)

Instructor Katie Schneider Gumiran is an educator, multimedia storyteller, and the director of Foreword Motion. She was a teacher and coach in Chicago Public Schools for 14 years, then directed a multimedia department for a leading national education nonprofit for 8 years. Katie holds a BFA in Playwriting from The Theatre School at DePaul University and an MA in Teaching from National-Louis University. Her media has been used for professional learning across the country and featured in Education Week, Learning for Justice, and The New York Times. Focused on education justice, she is co-producer of the Belonging podcast, which tells stories of exclusion and belonging in schools. She's a mother of two children who go to school down the street from NEIU, where she teaches ESL to parents. She is also a mom of two, and does community building in Chicago.
