History of Chesterfield County's 275th AnniversaryThe urgency to establish a new county was mainly due to the increased difficulty of residents who lived south of the James who needed to get to court in Henrico, north of the James. The decision was made to split Henrico in half and create Chesterfield from the southern portion of Henrico between the James and Appomattox rivers.
On May 1, 1749, the General Assembly passed an act officially dividing the County of Henrico to create Chesterfield and form a new separate political existence.
On May 12, 1749, the commander and chief of the Colony and Dominion of Virginia, Lieutenant Governor Sir William Gooch signed the charter that formed Chesterfield County and created the Commissioner of the Peace, which provided the authority to keep the peace in the County of Chesterfield and enforce ordinances and statutes of the Dominion of Virginia.
The proclamation of this Charter authorized Sir William Gooch to command the establishment of the Sheriff of the said County of Chesterfield. On May 25, 1749, Chesterfield County officially started its history, and the first court session was held on June 2, 1749.
