The Ashland Barracudas organization was founded in 1994 at Carter Park Pool with the goal of providing a summer league swimming opportunity for young people in the Ashland area. Since joining the Greater Richmond Aquatic League (GRAL) in 1995, the Barracudas team has grown to become a major component of the culture of the Ashland area. For over two decades, hundreds of Barracudas swimmers have valued teamwork and sportsmanship, all the while learning the importance of both cooperation and competition. Our team has valued swimmers ranging in ability from novice level to championship qualifiers to swimmers bound for college competition to an Olympic Trials qualifier. Each swimmer is viewed as capable of contributing to our team in his or her own way, and our team benefits from the wide ranging skills that our swimmers provide. Since its founding Ashland has earned the league’s Len Everett Award, granted in recognition of superior sportsmanship, seven times.
These are the values our coaching staff hopes to instill in our athletes today as well. Today, the Barracudas team includes swimmers up to 18 years of age with significant participation from all age groups and abilities of young people. Our team includes swimmers from twelve public schools in Hanover County, as well as swimmers from local private schools and home schooling programs. Our team is heavily involved with the Jamie Hess Fund at VCU Medical Center, a charity founded in memory of one of our swimmers that raises funds for pediatric bone marrow transplant research. We also have numerous team traditions ranging from our award winning team videos to our annual “No Screens” meet.
We hope that your swimmer or swimmers will find competing for the Barracudas to be a fun and productive way to spend the summer. We hope also that your family will find our family to be one that you return to summer after summer.
