Description
National Lifeguard certification is Canada's professional lifeguard standard. This training develops a sound understanding of lifeguarding principles, good judgment, and a mature and responsible attitude towards the lifeguard’s role. It emphasizes prevention and effective rescue response in emergencies including first aid treatment. Candidates develop teamwork, leadership, and communication skills.Fitness requirements include a timed object recovery, a 50-meter sprint challenge, a 50-meter rescue drill, and a 400-meter endurance challenge. The program includes classroom and water activities. 100 % attendance and participation are required.
Completion Criteria:• Attend and participate in 100 % of the course.• Successfully demonstrate competency in required skills, activities, and final evaluation.
Pre-Course Requirements: • 15 years of age by the first day of the course• Bronze Cross• Standard First Aid
Manuals Required for the Course (Available at the pool):• Alert, Lifeguarding in Action - approximate cost $50.40 • National Lifeguard Award Guide - approximate cost $27.72
NLS Awards will be mailed to successful candidates by the Lifesaving Society. Certification of this award is for 2 years.
Prerequisites Required by 1st Day of Class:-15 years old-Bronze Cross (does not need to be current) by first day of course-Standard First Aid and CPR C (does not need to be current) by first day of course*Note: The required Standard First Aid must be listed in The Public Health Act – Swimming Pools and other Water Recreational facilities: Section 12(c) The program includes classroom and water activities - 100% attendance and participation are required * Fitness requirements include a timed object recovery, 50-meter sprint challenge, 50-meter rescue drill, and 400-meter endurance challenge.The following items must be purchased in order to participateNational Lifeguard - Award Guide (Available for purchase at the pool)Alert Manual (Available for purchase at the pool)• 1 CPR pocket mask with a 1-way valve• 1 whistle (recommended Fox 40)• 6 pairs of latex-free gloves• 2 roller gauzes• 5 triangular bandages• 10 gauze pads• 1 golf pencil• 1 silver mylar blanket.You may choose to purchase a leadership kit ($37.96) containing these supplies at this facility or alternatively, you may purchase them on your own.Please bring multiple towels, snacks and changes of clothes.The facility is not open for viewing past 5:00PM. Parents/Guardians will be asked to wait in lower lounge facility. Spectating area is closed.
