Plein Air Painting - Color and Light at WAC
w/Claudia RillingA six (6) session classEnjoy a laid-back atmosphere as we study the flora, fauna, and man-made structures in and around the Wayne Art Center Grounds. We will work in the plein air tradition of painting. Each week a new "study" will be completed.Prior plein air painting experience required (or please practice using your equipment in the weeks leading up to the class).
Materials List for Claudia Rilling: Plein Air • Paper Towels / rags and small plastic bags for disposing of towels• Portable easel if working outside (Instructor uses a “Strada Mini”)• Canvas or wood Panels (1/4 inch is good) 8x8, 10x10, or 9x12• Paint Brushes- It’s good to have a variety of brushes that range in both type and size. Rounds, Flats, and Filberts are all good.• Paper Palette (or whatever you prefer) - at least 16 x 20. Or, if using a portable easel, it may come with a nice palette.• Metal palette knife. A pointed end is best, not larger than 3 inches long.• Some Paints: (or use what you have)Transparent earth yellow or yellow ochre— Ivory Black—Terra Rosa (optional) — Cadmium Red— Cadmium Yellow Light or Medium— Ultramarine Blue and one cooler blue— Titanium White (large tube is best)- Alizarin crimson- Sap green and one other stronger tube green.• any other colors that you like• Feel free to experiment with other tube greens and blues like Permanent Green, Cadmium Green, Pthalo Blue (VERY strong), Phtalo Green (VERY strong), Prussian Blue, Cerulean Blue, Radiant Blue, Radiant Turquoise• Suggested brand: Gamblin or Windsor Newton professional grade. Avoid student grade paints.• Liquin Original or linseed oil• Odorless Turpenoid or Gamsol• Jars or cups for medium and thinner. Make sure the lid seals tightly.• View finder (you can make a homemade version with pieces of cardboard taped together) or order the View Catcher.
