This intensive workshop is designed for adult singers with an interest in cabaret performance and music theatre, as well as for classical singers interested in developing crossover techniques. Some previous vocal training and performing experience would be an asset but is not compulsory.

Limited to 20 singers and 10 pianists; early application is advised. Singers do not have to apply with a pianist – a collaborative partner will be assigned or a professional collaborative pianist will be provided. Repertoire suggestions and scores will be sent to participants in advance of the program.

Singers and Pianists

This intensive encompasses daily masterclasses, lessons with faculty, classes in acting and performance practice, and a performance to conclude the week. This year’s course is Cabaret Origins, focusing on the repertoire of the early cabarets of Paris at the turn of the 20th century, the music halls and vaudeville stages of London and New York in the early 20th century, and the cabarets of Berlin in the 1920s and ‘30s. Among the repertoire choices are the social comedies of Noel Coward, the elegant art songs of Erik Satie, the passionate songs of Friedrich Hollander, and the social satire of Kurt Weill during his years of collaboration with Berthold Brecht.

Adult pianists with an interest in jazz and music theatre and experienced in collaborative work with singers are also welcome to participate in the course, but due to the complexity of the repertoire, pianists are asked to submit an audition video for acceptance into the program.

The faculty brings a wealth of experience in a wide range of genres, from opera to cabaret and contemporary stylings, and will work with the singers individually and in masterclass to develop their confidence and polish their performance as singing actors. Pianists will work with at least one singer and receive coaching on creative collaboration and appropriate style.

Refund Policy

Program viability is based upon minimum enrollment. As such, there are no refunds available after the registration deadline (in most cases, four weeks prior to the program start date), except in cases of injury or illness (for which a doctor’s note is required), or other exceptional circumstance, such as family re-location.
Prior to the registration deadline, tuition may be refunded, pending the approval of the Artistic Director. Application and transaction fees are non-refundable. Withdrawal requests must be made in writing to the Victoria Conservatory of Music’s Registrar’s Office. Requests made after the completion of a given program will not be considered.
