Beginning /Intermediate Gothic Cursive Calligraphy with IlluminationTuesdays (6): February 22 and March 1, 8, 15, 22 & 29 Time: 10:00 to 11:30 am Where: Dunbar Recreation Center, 801 MLK Dr. San Marcos, TX Cost: $50.00
Course Description:A beginning to intermediate calligraphy class concentrating on learning Gothic cursive hands (Bastarda) which are late gothic hands which were primarily used for secular literature (romances, poems, etc.) in the late medieval period. We will learn to write in this basic hand and learn some of the more common variations in this style. We will also spend some time on some related styles of illumination (border decoration) used with this style of hand lettering.
Materials ListCalligraphy paper •Either a pad of parchment paper or 20 sheets if individually purchased. [For practice ordinary printer/typing paper will be fine; however, using paper helps you get used to the character of the paper and into the spirit of the art.]EITHER • 1 Flat calligraphy nib (for lettering by Speedball size c-3 to no smaller than c-5) • 1 Fine pointed nib (for outlining and illumination) and • 1 nib holder (pen handle) OR • A fountain calligraphy pen (set with typically 3 nibs) YET will still need the nib holder and fine pointed nib Plus ink cartridges
Recommended• Watercolor paints: a dry set or tubs with at least red, yellow, and blue•1 Round paint brush (#1, 2, or 3)•1 Tube of white gauche•1 Can aqua net extra super hold hair spray (used as a sizing and fixative) •Gold ink or metallic gold, fine pointed gel pen
