About this event

Description

This class will provide students with a very detailed review of the primary operating systems that are used on today’s fire apparatus. Students will be shown troubleshooting techniques that firefighters and operators can perform to enhance the operator’s ability to provide detailed diagnosis information to the fire service fleet mechanic. The class will also cover the role of the apparatus operator dealing with emergency response equipment and the goal of being always operationally ready. This “hands on” class will provide a solid mechanical foundation for any individual involved with emergency fire apparatus including firefighters, engineers, and officers. This program can also serve to introduce new fire service maintenance personnel to the unique problems and issues associated with fire apparatus function, specifications, and daily operation. Topics discussed will include recognizing major apparatus system components and how they work including but not limited to, electrical systems, fuel systems, braking systems (air and hydraulic) and steering systems.
Students will receive explanations on the function of key apparatus system components and how to gather and interpret information collected from either on-board gauges or handheld test equipment safely and effectively. By the end of the week, students will be able to explain the relationship of volts, amps, watts and resistance, test and troubleshoot systems on the apparatus including batteries, starting and charging systems, on board generator systems and parasitic drains. Additional review of engine systems to include cooling, lubrication and turbo system operation, air conditioning principles and troubleshooting, small motors, hydraulic and pneumatic principals and air brake systems. In-depth review of fire pump design, operation, troubleshooting and operational readiness testing and preparation. Upon completion of this class, students will be able to explain the function of key system components and how to safely and effectively gather and interpret information collected from the on-board gauges, explain small motor principals including two and four stroke design, the advantages, disadvantages and applications of each in the fire service, understand and explain the function of key components of various airbrake systems including the importance and how to perform a routine daily airbrake test and interpret the information collected. This is a very “HANDS-ON” class utilizing a combination of various fire apparatus and classroom props that the students will work with during the week.
