About this event

Description

We're sorry, but this activity is over. The last meeting was Wednesday, April 24, 2024.

Eagles Island, which lies in the confluence of the Cape Fear and Brunswick Rivers, is just minutes away from downtown Leland and offers a great chance to view wildlife in their natural habitat.

Participants might get an up-close view of some of the many inhabitants of the Brunswick River and Eagles Island, including deer, porpoise, and alligators, along with the many birds that frequent these areas such as red-winged black birds, osprey, and bald eagles.

This intermediate level trip is between 6 and 7 miles long and will last up to 2.5 hours. This trip will not include stops to rest or stretch. This trip will be in full sun and will be affected by both wind and tides.

We will launch from Beville Riverwalk Park and come in at Cypress Cove Park. A shuttle will then take participants back to their vehicle.

The program fee includes the use of a kayak, paddle, and personal flotation device (PFD), which must be worn at all times on the water. Tandem kayaks can be provided for those who would like to paddle together and can be requested during registration; both paddlers in the tandem must be registered participants.

Participants who wish to use their own kayak, paddle, and/or PFD may do so and are given an opportunity to make note during registration, but must still wear their PFDs at all times. Email recreation@townofleland.com with questions.

Restrooms: it is unlikely that any restrooms will be available before, during, or after any of our trips. Some trips (Eagles Island) will not involve getting out of our kayaks. Please plan accordingly.
Shoes: please wear shoes for the duration of this trip. Water shoes or sandals that will not slide or pull off in mud, muck, or sand under water. No flip flops please.
Water/snacks: Please bring plenty of water and your own snacks as you wish. Drinking water will not be provided. Some but not all trips will include breaks for snacks. For those that do not include stops (Eagles Island), you may still wish to have a snack in the boat with you. Please be prepared to pack all of your trash out with you.
Sunscreen/Bug spray: Please bring/use your own sunscreen and bug spray. Most of the trips we will go on are buggy and kayaking is a great way to get sunburned legs and forearms!
