With the advent of synchronized sound recording in the late 1920s Hollywood entered a new era of artistic expression, exploring themes and subjects that would be banned by mandated censorship in 1934 and not resume again until 1968. We will screen and discuss five representative films of this period highlighting the filmmakers and the boundaries they pushed producing these works against a growing establishment outrage. *Caution: The subject matter and historical context of these films may be considered offensive by contemporary sensibilities.
