Description
We're sorry, but this program / activity is over. The last meeting was Sunday, December 20, 2020.
It's almost the longest night of the year, join us for a lantern walk around Lilly Lake! This program has two parts. One involves getting creative at home and building a lantern with stuff you have around the house and the other involves getting outside for an evening walk around Lilly Lake.
Making a lantern: Use your creativity to make a lantern at home. Please avoid using real flame candles. Use battery-operate candles or glow sticks to illuminate your lantern. Really just don't have time to make a lantern? No worries! You can walk with glowsticks or a flashlight. We recommend you cover the end of the flashlight with a piece of fabric or colored plastic wrap to reduce the brightness of the white light. If you have a store-bought lantern that you want to use, that's fine too! This is your program so alter to best fit your resources.
Joining for the walk: Sunset will be at 5:23pm. This walk will be a one-way track around Lilly Lake and will begin at 5:00pm. Participants wearing a mask are welcome to join the walk between 5:00pm and 6:00pm and you can make as many laps around the lake as you want in the allotted time. One lap around the lake is approximately 1/2 mile and mostly flat. Staff will close laps around the lake shortly after 6:45pm. The park gates will be closed and locked at 7:00pm and all participants must be out of the park at that time. Please dress for the weather. This program will take place unless there are unsafe driving conditions. Please check this page before heading to the park if the weather is questionable.
Other important details: 1. Masks are required to be worn for any participants who are age 3 or older. 2. There will be no restroom facilities near the walk. The Lilly Lake restrooms have been winterized. The closest restrooms will be the port-o-let at the 71st St. gatehouse. Please plan appropriately. 3. There are two designated parking areas available near the Lake. You may also park in the left lane of the road that parallels Lilly Lake south of 65th St. where signs permit. 4. This program is free with park admission. Park admission is $5 per car for Marion County Residents and $6 per car for out-of-county residents. 5. Please only register participants who are ages 3 and older, but younger children may attend.
