Who Is the Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress Best For?

Best for

  • Hot sleepers: The Helix Midnight Luxe uses coils, gel memory foam, and a cool-to-the-touch pillow top to prevent overheating at night.
  • People with back pain: If you struggle with back pain, spine alignment in a mattress is key for warding off pain at night. Testers scored the Helix a 9 out of 10 in spine alignment, making it a good choice for people with aches and pains.
  • Side, back, and combination sleepers: The hybrid construction of this bed makes it well-suited to all sleep positions.
  • Those who prefer a combination of comfort and support: If your preferred mattress feel is somewhere between firm support and a soft, huggable sensation, you’ll enjoy the Midnight Luxe’s balanced feel.

Not best for

  • Some stomach sleepers: We scored this bed a 5 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale, which may not offer enough support for stomach sleepers who sink into the mattress more.
  • Couples: Couples who sleep together may be disappointed with this mattress’s lack of motion isolation. It scored only 7.5 out of 10 in this area, meaning couples may feel their partner’s movements at night.
  • Those on a budget: With "Luxe" in its name, it’s not exactly shocking that this bed isn’t the most budget friendly. Still, you get what you pay for, and this mattress is a high-quality bed that’s built to last.

Inside the Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress

The Helix Midnight Luxe is a hybrid mattress, meaning it’s made up of different materials like coils and memory foam. Let’s take a look at the layers inside this ultra-luxe bed.

Pillow Top

This mattress starts off with a quilted pillow top made from Tencel, which is a breathable material known for its cooling abilities. To up the cool factor even more, add the GlacioTex cooling cover (for $199 extra), which uses a phase change material to pull heat away from your body.

Comfort Layers

We define comfort layers as any layers that are dedicated to cushioning the body and relieving pressure. The Helix Midnight Luxe has three of these: one gel memory foam layer, one foam layer designed to contour to your body, and a high-density polyfoam layer. All three work in tandem to mold to your frame for maximum comfort.

Support Layers

Without proper support on a hybrid mattress, you can feel like you’re sinking into quicksand. The Helix Luxe has a bed of more than 1,000 individually wrapped coils that provide lumbar and edge support. As you sink into the mattress, the coils keep you supported so you stay more "on top" of the bed rather than “n” the bed, which you get with all-foam mattresses.

Beneath these coils lies a layer of dense foam for extra support.

How Does the Helix Midnight Luxe Feel?

We measure mattress firmness on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being plush-soft and 10 being extra firm. Most people find they prefer something in the middle. The Helix Midnight Luxe feels like a true medium-firm.

Mattress Advisor testers rated it a 5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, which means you will sink into the mattress slightly, but not so much that you lack support. The quilted pillow top also makes for a more cushioning sleep surface than a mattress without a pillow top of the same firmness.

What Is It Like to Sleep on the Helix Midnight Luxe?

When you’re shopping for a mattress online, it can be hard not knowing what it feels like to lie on the bed. We took care of that for you by putting the Helix Luxe to the test in the mattress studio. Let’s take a look at how this bed performed in a few key areas.

Spine Alignment

Spine alignment is a measure of how well a mattress maintains a neutral spine position, which is important for relieving low-back pain. If you’re regularly active, you have enough opportunities throughout the day to strain your back, so your mattress shouldn’t be one of them.

Testers were impressed with how well the Helix Luxe kept their spines aligned. It earned 9 out of 10 in this category, making it a great pick for sleepers with back pain.

Edge Support

Do you like to sleep near the edge of your mattress? Maybe you use the side of the bed as a surface to tie your shoes on. Whether you do use the edge of your mattress, the edge support is for the overall stability and sturdiness of the bed. The Helix Luxe earned an 8 out of 10 in edge support, meaning it has a pretty solid perimeter that shouldn’t buckle under pressure.

Responsiveness

Thanks to the bouncy coils at the base of the mattress, the Helix Luxe earned a 9 out of 10 in responsiveness. For sleepers who change positions frequently, this is a big selling point.

Cooling

There’s nothing worse than tossing and turning at night, trying to find the cool spot on the bed. Testers think you shouldn’t have that problem with the Helix Luxe—it earned a near-perfect 9.5 out of 10 in cooling. The coils leave room for air to flow, and the cool-to-the-touch pillow top creates a sweat-free sleep surface.

Durability

Durability is important for the longevity of your mattress. The more well-made and durable a bed is, the longer it lasts.

In the case of the Helix Midnight Luxe, you should expect many nights of restful sleep. It earned a 9 out of 10 for durability in the mattress lab.

Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress by Sleeping Position

Different beds work best for different sleeping positions. So, in order to know if a mattress is right for you, it’s important to consider what position you sleep in. Here’s how the Helix Midnight Luxe performed with each:

Side Sleepers

For those who rest on their side, pressure point relief is key. Your shoulders and hips bear the most weight in this position, which the Helix Luxe is equipped to relieve. Thanks to its three layers of foam, this bed excels at pressure relief (it earned an 8.5/10 in this area). You can expect your sides to feel cushioned and well-supported.

Back and Stomach Sleepers

While the medium-firm feel of the Helix Midnight Luxe provides enough support for back sleepers, it doesn’t make the cut for some stomach sleepers. Heavyweight stomach sleepers who sink into the mattress more may find that their hips dip too low into the bed, causing their spine to fall out of alignment.

Combination Sleepers

Do you toss and turn at night? You’d be classified as a combination sleeper. Luckily, the Helix Midnight Luxe earned a high 9 out of 10 in responsiveness, which means it adapts quickly to your changes in position. So, if you switch from your back to your side to your stomach, you can expect this mattress to move with you.

Helix Policies: Everything You Need to Know

Shipping and Delivery

When you order a Helix mattress, expect it to take 3-10 days to be delivered. Shipping and delivery are free.

Unboxing

When the Helix arrives at your doorstep, it’ll come compressed and rolled in a box. Mattress Advisor testers found that it was relatively easy to unbox and set up, but keep in mind that because of its extra layers, it is a thick mattress.

You may want to recruit some help when unboxing this bed.

Trial Period and Returns

The Helix Luxe comes with a 100-night trial period, so, should you find it’s not to your liking, you can return it during that time frame for a full refund. You do have to wait at least 30 days before initiating a return, which is the standard amount of time it takes to break in a mattress.

If you decide to return your Helix bed before the end of the 100-night trial period, fill out a return on Helix’s website. Once Helix issues a refund, expect 5-7 business days for the refund to reflect in your account. Bonus: Helix donates gently used beds so, if you’re returning the bed while it’s still in good condition, you can feel good about where it’s going.

Warranty

The Helix Midnight Luxe comes with a 15-year warranty, which covers manufacturing defects like rips or tears. Make sure to keep a record of your receipt as you have to submit proof of purchase when filing a warranty claim.

Our Verdict

We found this mattress lives up to its name. The Helix Midnight Luxe scored high in nearly every category, making it a great fit for most sleeping positions. We also like how it promotes cooling and comes with a soft pillow top—a feature not seen in most bed-in-a-box mattresses.

Still, it may not be ideal for couples, as its motion isolation score was lacking. If you sleep with a partner who gets up frequently throughout the night—or tosses and turns a lot—you may feel their movements. Despite these less-favorable points, we think the pros heavily outweigh the cons. So, if the Helix Midnight Luxe has caught your eye, we recommend giving it a try.
