The Hockaday School • 11600 Welch Rd DallasTX  75229 Organized by Auxiliary Programs at The Hockaday School

About this event

Experience the power of STEAM in an all-girls setting. Each day, we will dive deeply into an aspect of STEAM and at least one famous woman in STEAM! Explore the power of polymers and linked chains of atoms. Learn about the science of Stephanie Kwolek, the inventor of Kevlar and a polymer scientist! See the science come alive by making your own bouncy ball. Follow Grace Hooper's story, the inventor of the COBOL computer language! Dive into the basics of binary and learn basic coding using Scratch. Before you leave, listen to Reshma Saujani, founder of Girls who Code, a passionate advocate for girls in technology. Have you ever driven across the Brooklyn Bridge? You've seen the work of engineer Emily Roebling! Join us in a day of engineering as we get hands-on with a set of bridge design challenges sure to get you thinking! Every time you have used an Apple product, you've seen the work of Susan Kare, a famous graphic designer! Learn about icon design, pixel-based art, and graphic design basics. Next, learn about Cheiko Asakawa, who helped pioneer text-to-speech and other accessibility technology for multimedia. End the day with a bang by 3D printing your icon design on a keychain! By breaking the Enigma code, mathematicians helped decipher German signals during World Word II. Learn about the only woman on the project, Joan Clark. Then, use your new cipher skills to break out from our digital escape room before it's too late! All Girls STEAM is offered in partnership with Lavner Education.
