About this event

Description

**Dates of this month's program: TUESDAY 5/7, THURSDAYS 5/9, 5/23, 5/30**
Have you ever wanted to learn American Sign Language (ASL)? Join our ASL class in a fun and safe environment taught by Jenny Witteborg, a Deaf Instructor.
These class series are developed to enrich your expressive and receptive skills in ASL while learning tidbits about Deaf Culture.
Learning ASL may benefit your ability to read people’s body language and help improve your spatial skills. No prior experience is necessary.
It has been said that it takes a village to raise a child. It’s truer when it’s a deaf or hard of hearing child. ASL is 100% visible, and even for deaf or blind children, it’s accessible. It’s also accessible for some nonverbal people.
After taking these sessions, you will develop a better understanding of ASL and Deaf Culture/Deaf World as well as statistics about deaf and hard of hearing people. Your journey in mastering ASL may take a lifetime, and you’ll meet cool folks along the way who are either deaf/hard of hearing, or disabled, or are people who just want to learn a new language.
Create a group (family, friends, work buddies) to attend the same sessions, and practice together! If you use it, you’ll learn. If you don’t use it, you’ll ‘lose it’. Come join us and learn in a safe and fun place.
Open to all ages 10+ (ANY AGE for a family, friend, or buddy with a deaf/hard of hearing member).

*ASL was declared to be a full language in 1960s based on the work of Dorothy Casterline and Carl Croneberg and William Stokoe in 1960s. Casterline who recently passed away was the first Deaf Hawaiian Native to enter Gallaudet University BEFORE Hawaii became USA’s 50th and last State. Carl Croneberg was from Sweden.
*Classes are tailored to each session's group; feel free to take multiple sessions/months and build, practice your skills.
