Description

We are offering Blended Learning Lifeguard Training courses. The lifeguard course includes an online learning component that will need to be completed before the first night of class. This is approximately 5-7 hours of course work. You will be asked to prove your completion of the online portion before continuing with the skill's pre-requisites and rest of the course.

When you successfully complete the course, you will be certified in Lifeguard Training, CPR/AED, and First Aid as mandatory components of the class.

Attendance is mandatory for ALL classes. To be eligible for the Lifeguard Training certification, participants must complete the online curriculum (Before you come to class) score 80% or higher on all written exams and satisfactorily perform all combined skills in the water, first aid, and CPR/AED.


The lifeguard course includes an online learning component that will need to be completed before the first night of class. This is approximately 5-7 hours of course work. Prerequisite 1:

  • Provide proof of age. Participants must be 15 years of age or older on or before the last date of the course.
  • Complete a swim-tread swim sequence without stopping to rest.
  • Jump into the water and completely submerge, resurface, then swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. (Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed).
  • Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs.
  • Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.
  • Prerequisite 2:
  • Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
  • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. (The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed).
  • Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7-10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
  • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face out at or near the surface.
  • Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
  • Please note that to be eligible for employment, the City of Coralville requires lifeguards to be 15 years of age.

A $25 application fee will be assessed for any cancellation. If a cancellation occurs within one week or less a $40 application fee will be assessed.

Coralville Parks & Recreation Department is offering a class reimbursement program! If you pass the class and work for us and fulfill other criteria, we will reimburse your class registration fee!
