SECURITY STUDIES AND INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

BASIS INDEPENDENT RED HOOK • 556 Columbia Street BrooklynNY  11231 Organized by BASIS Independent Brooklyn

About this event

This course taught by our very own Mr. Beall will introduce students not only to the security problems that are well known such as non-state militant actors, or terror groups, but the often-forgotten threats that aggressive states pose today and have posed in history. Students will not only engage in supervised, age-appropriate, high-school level in preparation for first year of university study of current security issues but will also understand the return of the threat of state actors. One should not forget that it was states invading neutral countries combined with other factors, that led to the first and second world wars, and also it was a state actor that invaded Ukraine in 2014 and escalated to a full-scale invasion in 2022. Furthermore, many political, military, and diplomatic commentators discuss great-power competition, such as the famous rivalry and strong economic integration between the United States and its current most powerful competitor, the People’s Republic of China. Lastly, students will familiarize themselves through careful instruction of various international relations theories such as Liberalism, Realism, etc. A global outlook and perspective will be encouraged so students “think outside the box.” As always, I have recommended all students do their best to achieve fluency in at least one other language outside the classroom, as this will enable them to better understand the world around them. Furthermore, through the use of simulations, students will be given the option to put themselves in the shoes of senior policy makers, military and intelligence leaders, and executives of their government, while facing distinct types of crises that are well known security threats today. Executives will make the decisions after carefully researching their country and the popular views of voters, and intelligence and military leaders will advise their presidents and what options are available to them.
