Teen Studio: Digital Photography

Kala Gallery and Classroom • 2990 San Pablo Avenue BerkeleyCA  94702 Organized by Kala Art Institute

About this event

Experiment with a range of photography styles and techniques from landscapes and portraits to photomontage and collage. A series of projects will offer opportunities to learn the technical and conceptual aspects of photography. We’ll cover framing and composition and spend time at Kala’s digital lab for an introduction to photo editing and printing. We’ll seek inspiration from the world around us and discuss artists and activists who use the camera as their unique creative tool. We’ll head outdoors for “photo walks,” to observe and capture the local landscape. Taking imagery and inspiration from these walks, we’ll combine photos we take with magazines and appropriated imagery to create photomontages, paper collages, and digital prints. Participants will need a digital camera, either a point-and-shoot camera or a DSLR (digital single-lens reflex) camera with photography modes and exposure settings. Make sure you have a memory card, battery, and charger. If you need access to a digital camera, Kala has a limited number for class use. Please contact youtharts@kala.org Instructor: Lee Oscar Gomez Lee Oscar Gomez (they/them/elle) immigrated from Mexico to the Greater Los Angeles area at an early age, developing a subtle awareness of the cultural differences of a new place, and a strong embodiment of record keeping to capture their experiences in a foreign land. Through documentary photography, Gomez operates and manipulates their fascination with light to demonstrate political visual images that address topics of gender, sexuality, belonging, and self-identity. These images include street photography and constructed studio shots. Using analog film processes, Gomez also captures warmth and sensitivity to these topics as a form of radical archiving. Gomez holds a BFA from San José State University in 2019. They have exhibited their artwork at Movimiento de Arte y Cultura Latino Americano, Gallery 1202, and the Norman Y. Mineta San José International Airport.
