Last-Minute Tips for Your First Tri

Tri Gear Checklist

This packing checklist will ensure that you at least have the basics. Be sure to rehearse your race the day before by laying out the gear you will need to get through the day.


  • Race Outfit (tri shorts/tank)
  • Wetsuit
  • Swim cap
  • Goggles
  • Timing chip
  • Anti chafe (body glide or similar--apply to neck & other chafe prone areas, as well as to the exterior of wetsuit at the lower legs and arms for easier removal of wetsuit post swim)
  • Towel (to use as a transition mat)


  • Bike
  • Helmet
  • Sunglasses
  • Bike Shoes
  • Water Bottles
  • H20 or energy drink of choice
  • Energy gel
  • Pump (a few will be available on site, but it's easier to have your own or pump your tires at home on race morning)
  • Spare tube, CO2/pump, tire levers
  • Number belt/safety pins


  • Running shoes with elastic laces
  • Socks
  • Visor or hat
  • Sunglasses
  • Post race clothes
  • Jacket or other warm clothes for before the race
  • Heart rate monitor
  • Extra water
  • Sandals
  • A smile : )
