4 Reasons to Sign Up for a Road Race

Signing up for a local road race can be a little nerve-wracking, especially for first-timers. But, it's also an ambitious way to kick-start a healthy fitness regimen and hopefully, lifestyle. Spring is almost here and races will be popping up like daisies, so why not join local runners and start pounding the pavement too? If you're looking for a little extra motivation, here are just a few reasons to shell out a few extra bones to register for a race:

  1. It's a healthy way to spend your cash. Signing up for multiple races can get expensive, but most people can fit a few races into their budget. If you do have to pinch a few pennies to register for a local event, it's a great incentive for cutting out a few unhealthier habits that add up—like eating out or pub crawls.
  2. Stay on track. Registering for a local race is a monetary investment, which usually encourages people to follow through with their fitness resolutions. And of course, no one wants to look like they haven't done a lick of training when race day rolls around.
  3. Encourages other healthy lifestyle changes. Whether you are enrolling in your first 5K or first marathon, adding mileage isn't the only way to achieve success. Practicing healthy habits in other aspects of life can really benefit runners and create a more rewarding training experience. These changes can include sticking to a more well-balanced diet, setting a better sleep schedule and cutting back on alcohol intake. These practices may not sound very fun at first, but they'll make you feel happier and more energized.
  4. Be a do-gooder. Almost every race donates a portion of the proceeds to a needy organization. And, if your New Year's resolution included exercising more and giving to charity, then conveniently, you're killing two birds with one stone.
