Playground Fitness 101

The jungle gym at the playground is a fantastic way to introduce kids to fitness; and it also doubles as a great way for adults to exercise without using costly equipment.

Why should your kids reap all the benefits of this fantastic outdoor fun? Next time you take your kids to play why not try one or all of these fantastic moves to help you tone, strengthen and stretch your muscles.

Each of these easy to do exercises uses equipment and materials found at most playgrounds. Get creative with your workout routines.

The Move: Hanging L Hold

What It Works: Arms, Back, Shoulders & Core
Playground Equipment You'll Need: Monkey Bars

Step 1

 

Grip the pull up bars overhead with arms extended fully. Raise your legs straight out in front of you so that they are parallel to the floor.

 

 

 

Step 2

 

Point your toes and keep your legs as straight as possible.
 
  

 

 

 

Hold this position for several deep breaths, lower your feet back down and repeat for the desired number of reps.

The Move: Box Jumps

What It Works: Core, Legs, Back, Cardio (Calorie Burner)
Playground Equipment You'll Need: A low platform the bottom level of the playstructure

Step 1

 

Stand with your feet hip width apart and knees bent, facing the step or box.

 

 

 

 

Step 2

 

In one fluid and powerful motion, swing your arms, tighten your abs and jump onto the box or step, landing both feet at the same time with knees bent.

 

 

 

Step 3

 

 

Hop back off the step or box, landing softly on both feet in your starting position.
