Allyson Thurber
Sherman Oaks, California
Sports: Triathlon, golf, surfing
Age: 52
Job: Executive chef
How I got started in sports: I started doing
triathlon with the help of Team in Training.
Athletic highlights: Placing third at IronGirl Las Vegas and placing first in my age group for two years in the sprint distance L.A. Triathlon.
Athletic goals: To compete for the L.A. Tri Club in the nationals in sprint distance.
What's cooking: I specialize in seafood, but when cooking for friends, I always love to barbecue a steak with vegetables from my garden.
Biggest training obstacle and how I overcome it: I'm not a great runner, and I get lazy sometimes. To overcome it, I give myself a walk break every 15 minutes--it makes the whole run more pleasurable and gives me a chance to refocus.
Scariest thing I've ever done: An armed robber was standing at the foot of my bed, and I talked him out of my house.
Favorite saying: L.I.G. (Let it go.)
