10 Running Events to Try in August

The hot, sticky days of summer may be upon us, but that's no reason to stay confined to air conditioning. Tune up for your upcoming fall races at one of these August running events. From small-town traditions to big-city beer runs, these races will keep you motivated and in shape. You can always cool off after you race with a popsicle and dip in the pool to celebrate your running achievement.

If a free brat isn't enough incentive to get you to the start line, perhaps the short distances—4 miles for runners and 2 miles for walkers—will entice you to lace up.

The mile may seem too short for distance runners, but it's a thrilling challenge to race a mile as hard as you can. Test your speed at the Massapequa Park road mile, which includes open, men's masters and kiddie quarter-mile divisions. Head to your local track to train, and see if you can come close to lowering the course records of 4:19 for men and 4:54 for women.
