Sabrina Grotewold
Active.com Running Editor
Sabrina Grotewold is the running editor for active.com. She enjoyed racing around the track as a child, but didn’t start running until after college to combat her sedentary life as an editor. Progressing gradually from three miles to 10 and up, she didn’t run her first road race until 2007, when she moved to New York City and learned that a nonprofit organization called New York Road Runners (NYRR) put on races in Central Park nearly every weekend. Her first four-mile race fell on a frosty December morning and, as she wheezed her way across the finish line, vowed she could do better.

Now, she runs nearly every day and has completed three marathons, 14 half marathons and several 10Ks and 5Ks, and enjoys strength and core training. She appreciates how quickly speed work increases fitness, but adores long, slow distance runs. She tries to stretch, cross-train, and practice yoga, and intends to use the foam roller more diligently.
New York City remains a special place for Sabrina—she worked for consumer magazines (Cosmopolitan, Seventeen and Smart Money), logged countless miles on city parks and bike paths, and followed her love of running to NYRR, where she worked for three years as an editor, and met her husband. The two relocated to San Diego shortly after getting married on the beach in Carlsbad, California. Sabrina has also worked as an editor for runningtimes.com and Competitor magazine.
The New York City Marathon remains her favorite race, although she has yet to run Boston (despite qualifying for it three times). For Sabrina, running is so much more than pounding out miles to prepare for races. While running, she discovers how she feels about things, comes up with story ideas, and learns more about herself.
Off the roads, Sabrina adores cooking, concocting her own healthy dishes, and revamping recipes for baked goods with healthier ingredients.
