Pre Race Tips for Your Obstacle Run

You've signed up for your first obstacle, mud or adventure run, trained sufficiently, completed enough bear walks, kettlebell swings, lunges, burpees, squats and pull ups to last a lifetime. Event day is almost here and you aren't sure what to expect but want to be as ready as you can be.

According to Brian Bateman, who has completed 16 events in one year (and counting), the element of surprise can be the most fun aspect of an event like this—but you still need to be prepared.

Here are his pre-race tips to make sure that, come the big day, you're prepared, calm and know what to expect (for the most part).

Say Goodbye to Your Clothes

Hold a parting ceremony/wake/prayer vigil for the clothes and sneakers you will be wearing on race day. They'll never be the same afterwards.

Get There Early

Allow for traffic, detours and other holdups. Some events set up offsite parking and a shuttle service to take you to the start—and all of that takes time.

Be Ready in the Morning

Pack all of your belongings the night before. Read the events message boards to find out what tools and advice past event goers might have. Event veterans will probably divulge what worked for them in terms of extra clothes, gloves, gel packs and the like.

Hydrate and Eat Well

Fuel up and eat the pre race meal that works for you, at least two to four hours before the event.

If you're not smiling, you're not having fun. "The feeling of elation doesn't subside for the whole course," says Bateman. "Everyone has smiles on their faces from the starting line through to the finish line. Never in a road race have I heard so much laughter. These runs aren't about beating out your neighbor but, rather, they're about overcoming obstacles and helping others along the way."
