Plan Your Perfect Outdoors Vacation in Vermont

Winter

Though some Vermonters curse the winter, many others embrace the snow. Kids grow up skiing and snowboarding; others spend their days in the woods snowshoeing or on the lake ice fishing. The snow doesn't stop Vermonters from getting out, and it shouldn't stop you.

Your Winter Vacation

As a visitor this time of year, have a plan for what you want to do. Take a family skiing lesson, rent snowshoes, or find a warm fireplace and cozy up as the snow comes drifting down.

  • On the Trail: Vermont ski resorts often rank as some of the best in the East. Ben Thiefels, born and raised in the state, has spent many years skiing the mountains of Vermont. If you're looking for big ski resort feel, he suggests heading to Killington; and be sure to ride the Great Eastern Trail. But, if you want to ride with the locals, head to Mad River Glen. This is a small town Vermont gem that only allows skiers.
  • On the Water: Though winter is no time to get in the water, you can get on top of it. When Lake Champlain freezes over, walk, skate, snowshoe, or cross-country ski on the snow and ice.
  • About Town: There are dozens of winter events this time of year. Be sure to catch the Burlington Winter Festival, with ice carvings, a snow sculpting competition, live performances and more. Other festivals include Bennington Winter Festival, Stowe Winter Carnival and Ice on Fire.

Vermont is the perfect vacation spot for adventurous families who want to stay active. Find a place to stay, pick a few trails, and make the most of what the Green Mountain State has to offer.
