Hiking With Your Dog: Rattlesnake 101

Signs Your Dog Has Been Bit

  1. Fang marks may be visible. Be aware that sometimes fang marks are very hard to see.
  2. There's bleeding from the puncture wound.
  3. Notice any swelling or redness around the wound.
  4. See if any bruising occurs.
  5. Your dog shows signs of pain: Whimpering, fatigue, sad...just not him or her self.
  6. Fido twitches or drools a lot.

What to Do if Fido Gets Bit?

  1. Try to identify the snake and take note if there is a rattle.
  2. Keep the dog as still as possible so that the venom does not spread.
  3. Do NOT cut the area or try to suck the venom out.
  4. Get to the closest vet ASAP.

Note: Some vets don't carry the antivenin needed. Therefore, if you're going camping, hiking or live in a rural area—check to see what vet in the area that carries it.

Snake bites are a serious concern and should not be taken lightly. The treatment is not only extremely expensive, but it's painful for Fido. Many dogs are lost each year because of snake bites so PLEASE be extremely careful and take the proper precautions to prevent Fido from being bit.
